You don't need a big budget to run a tidy online business. Here's a short, honest list of free tools that cover the basics for Nigerian vendors selling on Instagram, WhatsApp and X: showing your products, designing posts, sharing links, taking payments and getting found.
We only included tools with a genuinely useful free option, and we've said where the limits are.
1. WhatsApp Business app: your shop counter
What it's for: a separate business profile, quick replies, labels, and a product catalogue.
Free? Yes, the app is free to download and use.
Why it matters: the catalogue lets you list up to 500 items, each with up to 10 photos or videos, and hide items when they're out of stock. Customers can browse without asking "send pictures".
Limit: your catalogue doesn't show up on Google, and it only lives inside WhatsApp. See WhatsApp catalogue vs a website.
2. Google Business Profile: get on Google Maps
What it's for: appearing on Google Maps and in local searches like "cakes near me".
Free? Yes. Google says adding or claiming a profile costs nothing.
Limit: you need to verify the business, and purely online shops that never serve customers in person aren't eligible. Our step-by-step guide: Google Business Profile for a small shop in Nigeria.
3. Canva (free plan): flyers, posts and Status designs
What it's for: designing product posts, flyers, menus and Status images from templates.
Free? Canva has a free plan for individuals. Paid plans add more templates, brand kits and AI features.
Tip: make one template with your colours and logo and reuse it, so your posts look consistent.
4. PlugPage free tools: order links, QR codes and price lists
Yes, these are ours. They're free, need no sign-up, and run entirely in your browser:
- WhatsApp Order Link & QR Generator: type your number, product and price and get a link that opens WhatsApp with the order already typed, plus a QR code you can print on flyers, packaging or your shop counter.
- Price List Maker: type your items and prices and download a clean image sized for WhatsApp Status (1080×1920) or Instagram (1080×1080).
5. Linktree (free tier): one link in your bio
What it's for: putting several links (WhatsApp, catalogue, price list, website) behind the one link Instagram and X allow in your bio.
Free? Linktree's free plan includes unlimited links.
Limit: a link-in-bio page is a list of buttons, not a shop. It won't show your products and prices or help you rank on Google the way a proper page does.
6. Paystack: payment links and card payments
What it's for: accepting card, bank transfer and other payments with a clear confirmation, which helps against fake alerts.
Free? No setup or monthly fee; you pay per transaction. Paystack's published local fee in Nigeria is 1.5% + ₦100 (₦100 waived under ₦2,500, capped at ₦2,000). Our pricing guide shows how to include it in your prices.
7. Pexels: free stock photos (for backgrounds, not products)
What it's for: banners, backgrounds and lifestyle images for posts.
Free? Pexels says all its photos and videos are free to use, and attribution isn't required.
Important: never use stock photos to represent your actual products. Customers want to see what they'll receive. Use your own photos for products, and stock images only for decoration. Pexels also doesn't allow implying that people or brands in its images endorse your product.
8. Your phone camera and daylight
Not an app, but the most underrated tool. A clean background, natural light near a window and a steady hand beat any filter. Take photos of the real item from 2–3 angles and keep them consistent.
What's missing from free tools?
Free tools are great, but they're scattered: your catalogue is in WhatsApp, your designs are in Canva, your links are in Linktree, and none of it shows up on Google. Many vendors end up with a pile of half-finished profiles.
That's the gap PlugPage fills: one fast page with your products, prices, location, reviews and WhatsApp order buttons, built for you and live in 24 hours (Google Business Profile setup is included on our Pro plan). See pricing or look at our demo shop.
